He is none other than Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. He was applauded by the public for being articulate and calm when he speaks during a press conference and providing prompt updates on his Facebook and Twitter pages.
Netizens labelled him as a “national hero” for his credibility in managing the health crisis
The 57-year-old Health DG is quick to become a popular name since the start of the outbreak. He has now become the face of Covid-19 updates in Malaysia and many people are praising him and sending positive tweets and posts about him.
The short clip was taken during a press conference when a press labelled him as a “national hero.” His reaction was purely humble, saying that it’s all about teamwork.

Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah explained that what’s more important was the mandate and service given by the country during this tough time. He has been in the frontline day and night managing the Covid-19 crisis – even during the absence of a minister and deputy minister during the political crisis. He calmly attending to questions from journalists and netizens with such professional and calm.
So, who is Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and why everyone is praising him?

Dr Noor Hisham was appointed as the Health Ministry’s director-general on March 1, 2013, after serving as its deputy director-general since Feb 1, 2008. He has served under three governments, the era of Barisan Nasional, to Pakatan Harapan to the current Perikatan Nasional coalition.
He is a well-trained surgeon

Datuk Dr Hisham is a well-trained surgeon and administrator. He is also the head and senior consultant breast and endocrine surgeon in Putrajaya Hospital.
Dr Noor Hisham has a master’s degree in surgery and a medical doctorate from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He later joined the civil service as a medical officer in August 1988. He then went on to specialise in endocrine surgery and did his training in various universities in Adelaide and Sydney, Australia.

Dr Noor Hisham has published numerous articles both in local and international journals and written many textbook chapters in endocrine surgery. He also provides leadership in many different innovative health outreach learning and programmes in Malaysia.
He also chairs the Global Surgery Subcommittee of the International Society of Surgery (ISS) for 5 years (2017-2021). As the Health DG, he is in charge of all the individual Health Departments of the different states.
